At the exit door an ACTUAR representative will meet you and take you to a charming San José hotel. If you have time, do a walking tour of downtown by yourself. Overnight at 1492 Hotel (B) Day 2 San Jose – Arenal Volcano Your driver-guide for the next 10 days will pick you up to your hotel in the morning. Set out for Arenal Volcano. The trip to La Fortuna, the town to the east of the volcano, is very picturesque, with views of dairy farms and local agriculture. In the evening enjoy relaxing soak at the hot springs with dinner. Overnight at La Catarata Ecolodge (B,D) Day 3 Enjoy Arenal Enjoy your free time to explore the area by your-self. Optional activities could be: Arenal Volcano National Park, hiking at Arenal Hanging Bridges. For those who enjoy a more strenuous hike, there is Cerro Chato and Waterfall tour an extinct volcano south of Arenal Overnight at La Catarata Ecolodge (B) Day 4 Arenal - Río Celeste Go northwest around Lake Arenal and then north to Tenorio National Park, home to the impressive turquoise blue Río Celeste. Optional activity: Horseback riding. Overnight at Catarata Río Celeste (B) Day 5 Immerse yourself in Río Celeste Go to Tenorio National Park and hike to the gorgeous Río Celeste waterfall, one of the most beautiful sights in all Costa Rica. During your hike, you’ll see beautiful flora and fauna, and many species of birds. Farther along the trail you can bathe in hot springs naturally heated by Tenorio Volcano. You’ll also come to the place where two rivers meet and create the amazing turquoise blue color of the Río Celeste because of the chemical reaction that happens between calcium carbonate and the sulphur emitted by the volcano. Overnight at Catarata Río Celeste (B) Day 6 Rio Celeste - Isla de Chira Your adventure continues in the Gulf of Nicoya, where at Costa de Pájaros a bilingual guide will wait and take you by boat past impressive mangrove swamps to the Isla de Chira. Learn about traditional fishing techniques. You’ll also visit Isla Paloma, a sanctuary for aquatic birds. Isla de Chira is a great place to go biking. You can pedal to Playa Romántica to watch the sunset. At night, listen to the fisherwomen tell their stories. Overnight at La Amistad Rural Inn. (B-L-D) **Your driver-guide will separate from you this night and will pick you up next day at Palito’s Dock Day 7 Get into the rainforest of the Karen Mogensen Reserve Take the boat back to the mainland where your driver-guide will be waiting for you to explore one of the Nicoya Peninsula’s hidden jewels, the Karen Mogensen Reserve: 2224 acres of tropical forest with the 80-meter (262-foot) Bridal Veil Falls, natural swimming holes, and wonderful trails through primary rainforest. Cerro Escondido Rural Inn is in a hidden valley in the middle of the Reserve. Here you can disconnect from everything and find yourself again amidst the sounds of the forest. Don Arnulfo will be your guide to reconnecting with the essence of life in nature. You can only get to Cerro Escondido by hiking an hour and a half uphill through the forest after enjoying a refreshing dip in the swimming holes. Your car will be parked in a safe place until your return. Overnight at Cerro Escondido Rural Inn. (B, L, D) Day 8 Explore with Don Arnulfo Climb up to the mirador to watch the sunrise over the forest. After a delicious country-style breakfast, go hiking in the forest or down to the waterfall with Don Arnulfo complete with picnic lunch. Overnight at Cerro Escondido Rural Inn. (B, L, D) Day 9 Discover the beaches of the Nicoya Peninsula The southern tip of the Nicoya Peninsula is a remote area where you will find beautiful deserted beaches at the foot of steep cliffs that go down to the sea, creating majestic scenery. Relax at the beach at Montezuma or visit the Montezuma waterfall with its three natural pools. Overnight at Sano Banano or a similar lodging.(B) Day 10 Explore the coast between Montezuma and Cabo Blanco Explore the beaches or drive down to Cabo Blanco National Park at the very tip of the Peninsula. Overnight at Sano Banano or a similar lodging.(B) Day 11 Take the ferry across the Gulf and go back to San José Take the ferry in Paquera between the green islands in the Gulf of Nicoya. Once you get to the port city of Puntarenas, try a traditional churchill (snow cone) as you stroll along the Paseo de los Turistas, or stop for fresh ceviche. Depart for San José, about 2.5 hours away. Stay in a charming San José hotel. Overnight at 1492 Hotel (B) **Ferry fees are not included for the one on the self-drive program. Day 12 Come back soon!
